"The PC version does indeed contain some old, unused render settings that were deactivated for a variety of reasons," the post explains, "including possible impacts on visual fidelity, stability, performance and overall gameplay quality."

You can read the statement in full below:

The dev team is completely dedicated to getting the most out of each platform, so the notion that we would actively downgrade quality is contrary to everything we've set out to achieve. We test and optimize our games for each platform on which they're released, striving for the best possible quality. The PC version does indeed contain some old, unused render settings that were deactivated for a variety of reasons, including possible impacts on visual fidelity, stability, performance and overall gameplay quality. Modders are usually creative and passionate players, and while we appreciate their enthusiasm, the mod in question (which uses those old settings) subjectively enhances the game's visual fidelity in certain situations but also can have various negative impacts. Those could range from performance issues, to difficulty in reading the environment in order to appreciate the gameplay, to potentially making the game less enjoyable or even unstable.

Update: Many users are claiming that these mods may not add graphical improvements, but rather activate files and assets already contained within the PC version of the game. Mod creators TheWorse and Kadzait24 have allegedly found and activated files such as "E3 2012 Bloom" and "E3 2012 Explosions" There has already been heated controversy over the purportedly decreased graphical fidelty in Watch Dogs' final release from its first E3 showing in 2012. Ubisoft later stated that the graphics had not been downgraded.

TheWorse has said that he has found old E3 files and turned them on in his mod, but the consequence of these files has not been demonstrated yet. His mod adds many other improvements beyond these E3 files, but the specific effect of "E3 2012 Bloom" on its own has not been shown.

We have reached out to Ubisoft for comment on the existence and effect of these files in the game.

Original story below:

Regardless of how good you think Watch Dogs looked when it finally came out when compared to its initial unveiling at E3 2012, if you own the game on PC, don't mind tinkering, and have the hardware that can handle it, you can make the game look better thanks to some resourceful modders.

For example, if you've seen this video, which compares Watch Dogs to the PC version of Grand Theft Auto IV (released in 2008) you've probably noticed that one thing Watch Dogs lacks is dynamic lighting from cars' headlights.

Guru3D forum member Kadzait24 and TheWorse have both claimed credit for working on a mod that adds that visual effect to Watch Dogs, along with a lot of other features. The mod, which you can find on Guru3D, also aims to add an improved bloom effect, higher density of civilians, and more.

Watch Dogs broke 24-hour sales records for Ubisoft and went on to sell more than 4 million copies in its first week. Ubisoft expects Watch Dogs to sell 6 million total units, the same lifetime figure of the original Assassin's Creed. The controversial clause requires that, for an indie game to be released on Xbox, it cannot be released earlier on another platform.

However, in March Microsoft said that it would look at indie games on a "case-by-case basis" to determine if it would allow them to launch on Xbox One after other platforms. The release of Outlast on Xbox after PS4 and PC is one of the first games to fulfill this promise.

Microsoft's Chris Charla offered the following statement to GameSpot about the release: "We're really excited about the content ID@Xbox game developers are creating for Xbox One, including Outlast from Red Barrels and Sixty Second Shooter Prime from Happion Laboratories, both launching today. We want players on Xbox One to have access to the broadest and most diverse selection of innovative games. Obviously independent games are a huge part of that, and through ID@Xbox we're committed to bringing gamers both new independent game innovations and fan favorites."

GameSpot reviewed Outlast when it was released on PS4 and thought it was pretty good.

Alex Newhouse is an editorial intern at GameSpot, and you can follow him on Twitter @alexbnewhouse

Got a news tip or want to contact us directly? But while this worked on the PSP, Sony ran into difficulties with the PS Vita: "When we launched the Vita with Uncharted, it was amazing; PS3-like quality in your palm, but as time moved on, you are seeing PS4 quality and people's expectations for the graphic fidelity has gone up."

With the dramatic increase in graphical quality on consoles, the focus on handheld visuals and, consequently, the demand for games like Uncharted have gone down. Fortunately for Sony, Yoshida explained, indies have picked up the slack: "It's very fortunate that the indie boom happened and they are providing lots of great content to Vita. I think [indies are] actually the biggest star to help provide great content to Vita going forward."

When asked if this means that Sony will be making fewer first-party Vita titles, Yoshida responded, "I would say, yes, that's correct."

However, Yoshida also reiterated the importance of Remote Play in providing content to the Vita. The system, which streams games from a PlayStation 4 to a Vita, is one of Sony's main selling points for the handheld. The upcoming release of streaming service PlayStation Now will also bring games to the Vita, Yoshida said: "We are super excited about how people are using it. We will continue to provide more utility to Vita as a PS4 companion device as well as PS Now terminal."

Although Sony did not say much about the Vita at this year's E3, this month's sales numbers indicated that the Vita is selling better than in previous months. Now, Garry's Mod and Rust developer Garry Newman has responded to the drama, stating his thoughts across a series of tweets today.

"It would undoubtedly be good if there were more female protagonists in games, but rallying against games for not having any is insane, in my own personal opinion," Newman said. "I don't know why you think I'm against adding diversity. I'm against trying to force developers to add diversity."

Last week, as the news broke that Assassin's Creed Unity and Far Cry 4 would not have playable female characters, Newman controversially said, "I never understand the misguided outrage of the self-elected video gamer feminists." Someone then asked him if he planned to add female avatars to Rust, to which he--perhaps jokingly--replied: "No, women are silly."

Newman's comments today on Twitter were made to a person who asked if they could have a refund for Rust. Newman said, also as a joke, "You need to talk to steam support. We don't have a procedure in place to give refunds to people offended by jokes on Twitter."

In the end, Newman maintains that Ubisoft was unfairly singled out in this case. "I am not against a conversation," he said. "I felt it was unfair to [rally] against a single company and stomping on them as if they invented sexism."

The role of women in games is making mainstream headlines, as the Associated Press today ran a story about why there are not more major games with leading ladies. The story features comments from executives at Activision, Ubisoft, and Electronic Arts. EA Studios executive Patrick Soderlund says, "My thesis is that it's a male-dominated business. I'm not sure that flies, but I think it overall may have something to do with it--that boys tend to design for boys and women for women."

It was originally suggested that creating female playable characters for Assassin's Creed Unity would have been too technically taxing, but Ubisoft issued a formal statement later on to explain the real situation. "We recognize the valid concern around diversity in video game narrative," Ubisoft said at the time. "Assassin's Creed is developed by a multicultural team of various faiths and beliefs and we hope this attention to diversity is reflected in the settings of our games and our characters. With regard to diversity in our playable Assassins, we've featured Aveline, Connor, Adewale and Altair in Assassin's Creed games and we continue to look at showcasing diverse characters. We look forward to introducing you to some of the strong female characters in Assassin's Creed Unity."

Eddie Makuch is a news editor at GameSpot, and you can follow him on Twitter @EddieMakuch

Got a news tip or want to contact us directly? If we fail, we lose our chance at revenge." Ocelot refers to Kazuhira "Master" Miller, Big Boss's compatriot and survival trainer from FOXHOUND, the pair's former pre-Diamond Dogs mercenary unit.

02:47 - "I suspect you'll become quite familiar with those binoculars as you plan your next move." Ocelot comments on Big Boss's ever-useful binoculars. Given that Big Boss used the same binoculars during Ground Zeroes, this is an odd comment.

03:00 - "You're a legend in the eyes of those who live on the battlefield. That's why you have to handle this mission yourself. Put those nine years behind you, and return as Big Boss. That's how Kaz would want it." Ocelot comments to Big Boss about Big Boss. It seems that he may be talking to him in this manner because Big Boss (potentially) suffered some memory loss due to the accident at the end of Ground Zeroes and the resulting nine-year coma between then and the events in The Phantom Pain.

03:37 - "He'll be missing them, and you're his only hope of getting them back." Ocelot refers to Miller's iconic sunglasses. This comment and the visual pause on the sunglasses seems to be more about providing fan service than hinting at plot points.

04:00 - "Let the legend come back to life." Big Boss has a reputation as a legendary soldier, but since he was dormant for nearly a decade, it's going to take an act of bravery and stealth to renew his former glory.

04:40 - A marker in the middle of the map is indicated as being 943 meters away from Big Boss's location at that point in the mission. Before this occurred, Big Boss received a weather alert via his iDroid from the intel unit back at Mother Base. Visibility during sandstorms is low, meaning that enemies are less likely to spot Big Boss, but it will also significantly obscure his sight line. This alert is dependent on the abilities of the Intel Unit back at Mother Base, which is composed of soldiers that you've recovered from the field.

09:36 - Big Boss collects raw diamonds from the field, which is one example of the various raw materials that Big Boss can find. It's described in-game as: "a cigar blend with a medicinal herb that speeds up the user's perception of time. Loses efficacy if the user is under stress, for instance if spotted by an enemy." You're in full control of when time stops.

12:45 - Big Boss opens the iDroid while using the phantom cigar to closely monitor patrol paths and set waypoints. The R&D department can create and deliver primary and secondary weapons, support weapons, items, and tools. Items fall into different "grades." Some items begin as a "grade 1" item and can be leveled up into other grades, while some items are grade 2 or 3 by default. The grade designation appears to indicate how expensive an item is.

14:47 - Big Boss pops out of a cardboard box, from the top, to attack an enemy. The Wii U's situation isn't all that different, he said.

"As I look at what we have coming this holiday, now with Mario Kart and Super Smash Bros., plus the innovation of Amiibo, I think we are right at that tipping point where we have a lot of great content that is about to be released for that platform that's going to tempt gamers into buying the system," Moffitt said. "From the comments I'm reading online, and following gamers' comments, I think there are a lot of people that are going to have a hard time resisting buying a Wii U once Smash Bros comes out. I think that's going to be a major hardware driver for us. So that's the narrative we hope that plays out and that I think we are starting to see play out."

"I think there are a lot of people that are going to have a hard time resisting buying a Wii U once Smash Bros comes out" -- Nintendo's Scott Moffitt

Wii U hardware sales have been on the rise since the release of Mario Kart 8 last month, which sold 1.2 million copies during its launch weekend alone. Nintendo also has a new open-world Legend of Zelda game in the works for 2015, another title that would be likely to help sell consoles. One method Nintendo won't employ to boost sales is by unbundling the Wii U GamePad (and thereby presumably lowering the price), Moffitt said.

The Wii U GamePad is the most truly innovative piece of technology released for any of the new consoles, and Nintendo has no plans to abandon it, he said.

"We think GamePad is the only innovation that's come in this new generation of consoles. So we have the only real point of difference," Moffitt said. "Certainly graphics are faster, graphics are better. This is not a real innovation for gamers. We are fully committed to leveraging the GamePad, to keeping it bundled with the system."

This stance varies from that of Microsoft, which--after feedback from fans--started selling Xbox Ones without Kinect last week for $100 less than what the consoles sold for at launch just seven months ago.

Also in the interview, Moffitt broached the subject of third-party support for the Wii U. He pointed out that Nintendo has the support of big-name publishers like Sega, Warner Bros., and Activision, but acknowledged that it's up to Nintendo to drive console sales to encourage more publishers to make games for the console.

"It's all about driving the install base and so that's our work to do, right? We need to get to a critical mass where it makes financial sense for them," he said.

As of March 31, Nintendo has sold 6.17 million Wii U consoles worldwide.

Recently, Sony also said that there is still a chance that a PS Vita/PS4 bundle will be made available.

Alex Newhouse is an editorial intern at GameSpot, and you can follow him on Twitter @alexbnewhouse

Got a news tip or want to contact us directly?

That's why you have to handle this mission yourself. Put those nine years behind you, and return as Big Boss. That's how Kaz would want it." Ocelot comments to Big Boss about Big Boss. It seems that he may be talking to him in this manner because Big Boss (potentially) suffered some memory loss due to the accident at the end of Ground Zeroes and the resulting nine-year coma between then and the events in The Phantom Pain.

03:37 - "He'll be missing them, and you're his only hope of getting them back." This comment and the visual pause on the sunglasses seems to be more about providing fan service than hinting at plot points.

You're in full control of when time stops.

12:45 - Big Boss opens the iDroid while using the phantom cigar to closely monitor patrol paths and set waypoints. Speaking with GamesIndustry International at E3, Moffitt pointed out that the 3DS also got off to a slow start before Nintendo cut the price and released key first-party games like Mario Kart 7 and Super Mario 3D Land.
