Can We Trust Kickstarter?

As the guy in the video points out, with kickstarter its the backers that assume the role of the publisher in that relationship.

The problem is that a traditional publisher does more than just bankroll the project. They also have people who understand how to manage complex projects like a video game, and when necessary they can step in to take measures and protect their investment.

While developers will usually have undeniable technical skill and a vision, they sometimes lack that ability to harness it, leading to overly ambitious targets, scope creep (steady addition of new features without realising the increased development effort) and so on. Developers may hate being told by a guy in a suit to scale back their grandiose vision, but it's often because the suit knows something they don't.

With kickstarter, the backers are like publishers who just pour the money in and leave the developers to it. There's nobody who can sit down with the developers and provide structure and guidance and hold them accountable. That can be a recipe for disaster, just ask Eidos and Ion Storm.
